ABOUT THE CFAA
The CFAA is a non-profit professional association that serves the film and digital production communities in Sacramento, CA and surrounding Northern California regions.
Out of the ashes of the original Sacramento Film Group, which was run by Laura Coulter and Tony Sheppard out of the Crest Theater, the Capital Film Arts Alliance was repurposed/founded in 2004 by Laurie Pederson, Bryan Darling and Jason Bortz, to provide a dedicated place for local filmmakers and content creators to meet, network, learn, share work and develop their professional resources and connections. We held meetings in the basement of the Fools Foundation Art Gallery on J Street, eventually moving to a downtown K Street photo gallery/shop, from there we moved to the Sacramento Poetry Center on 25th Street - with every location requiring a full company move each meeting to set up chairs, A/V equipment and portable projector. Sometime in 2006 we became the first creative association to partner with the Art Institute of Sacramento, who offered us classroom space, seating, full A/V service, a climate controlled environment and free parking! We have expanded our programming and worked closely with AI and their students since that time, which has been a benefit to the entire community. When Ai closed in 2018, we moved to The Workshop, and after a full year, we are soon relocating to our new home inside the Eden Studios on Power Inn Rd., as part of the region's new film studio and production hub. Our programs and events can grow exponentially and we have great plans for 2020 thanks to our partners there.
In 2009 the CFAA was awarded a 501(c)3 non-profit status, and has become a vibrant organization with an audience of over 3,000 unique individuals who make up much of the visual and media production industry in the Sac-Sierra region today. Run by an all-volunteer board of directors, the organization functions extremely well on a minimal budget that is provided by member fees and sponsorships. As fellow filmmakers and artists, we are dedicated to the creative growth of the region's independent film industry and its people. We also seek to incorporate opportunities for underserved communities and have created a detailed Racial Equity Statement that underscores that importance to the organization.
Our mission is to create a network of creative professionals, and to provide a forum for communication, activities, education and information in order to grow the local film arts community and develop the professional industry in our region. Working together with our creative members, city and state government, local business and other community leaders, we have become a trusted film resource, respected arts partner and the area's largest association of active filmmakers, writers, actors and all related talent.
The CFAA is made up of local, independent filmmakers, writers, production & post crew and artistic talent; as well as the retail and support businesses and services that supply and service this local industry. All levels of skill and experience are welcome. Whether you are an aspiring talent or a seasoned professional, there is an opportunity for you to contribute, learn, and benefit from networking and connecting with this creative association.
Since 2004 we have developed programming (3x per month), annual events and creative partnerships and we publish our weekly film news to an audience of over 5,000. All this with an entire board of directors who are volunteers. The passion runs deep with this dedicated group.
Watch for news in 2020! Attend CFAA meetings and workshops to grow skills, meet new friends, gain contacts, resources and partners, and learn about what's happening in your film community! We hope to see what YOU are creating soon!
